Description
REC Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
The EFAW course is designed to provide a systematic approach to first aid for managing casualties. It balances theory and practical application through real-world scenarios.
The course includes
- The fundamental workings of the body, particularly the heart, lungs, and airway.
- Recognising the difference between healthy, ill, and injured states.
- Recording baseline measurements of vital body functions.
- A system for safely managing all incidents.
- Coverage of the HSE syllabus for emergency first aiders at work, according to the '81 and '97 regulations and the UK and European Resuscitation guidelines.
Course Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental physiological functions of the human body, with a specific focus on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
- Conduct thorough and efficient casualty assessments.
- Implement a structured system for managing a wide range of first aid incidents.
- Make informed decisions regarding appropriate first aid interventions.
- Recognise and mitigate the challenges associated with delayed medical assistance and adverse environmental conditions.
Course Content
First aid training with the REC scheme is designed to be engaging and progressive, building on each session with new scenarios to test techniques.
On completion of the training, successful candidates should be able to:
- Understand the role of the first-aider, including the importance of preventing cross-infection, the need for recording incidents, and the use of available equipment.
- Assess the situation to act safely, promptly, and effectively in an emergency.
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizures).
- Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking.
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding.
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock.
- Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns, scalds, and splinters).
- Includes practical training on how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
